The character "П" is used on the railway in Russia as a telegraph code for the designation of the Way Department (means “путь” - put' - way). Employees of this department can be seen engaged in heavy manual labor in any weather, any season of the year in very remote railroad parts.
I am working on a project on the aesthetics of the railway environment. At the moment I am collecting material and making snapshots. Have look on my instagram.
I was interested in the very specific aesthetics of this environment and the phenomenon of perception of this aesthetics by people who work there. The process of interaction and mutual influence between the aesthetic being and the environment generates a structure that acquires a stable form, its own system of signs and begins to reproduce itself after several generations.
Railroader's community in Russia is quite closed. People work there for many years and mobility exists mainly within the organization itself. So, it is quite difficult for a person inside the system to step back and look at what is going on from an outside observer perspective.
As I have access, I believe that this topic can be investigated by means available to me.
